American Silver Eagle Design

The American Silver Eagle bullion coin features one of the most popular designs in United States coinage, paired with an original reverse design. This design has been used for the one ounce bullion coin from its introduction in 1986 to the present day.

Silver Eagle obverse

The obverse of the coin is based on Adolph A. Weinman's design for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. This design was used for the circulating half dollar coin rom 1917 to 1947. Liberty is pictured walking forward with one hand outstretched and the other holding an olive branch. The sun is rising before her and she is draped in an American flag. This design is considered to be an iconic image from the Renaissance era of United States coinage.

Silver Eagle reverse

The reverse design of the American Silver Eagle was created by John Mercanti, specifically for the bullion coin. It features a heraldic eagle with a shield. The eagle grasps an olive branch and a bundle arrows in its talons. The reverse includes incriptions indicating the silver bullion content of the coin.
